Protecting Democracy

We’re working to defend democracy in Pennsylvania

Protecting Our Environment Means Protecting Our Democracy

A growing majority of American voters—especially young people, people of color, and women—support action to fight climate change and protect public health.

Without a functioning democratic process, that coalition cannot win elections or translate electoral victories into policy change. That’s why the health of our climate depends upon the health of our democracy.

Translating Public Will into Policy

62 percent of Pennsylvania voters support stronger action to address climate change.

But turning the people’s will into law with meaningful environmental legislation requires a responsive government and functioning democratic institutions.

The Fight For Our Democracy Begins in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is the birthplace of American democracy. Fittingly, it is also on the front lines of the current battle to protect democracy.

In recent years, Pennsylvania Republicans have taken increasingly bold and dangerous steps to thwart the will of Pennsylvania voters. They have gerrymandered legislative districts, attempted to gerrymander the judiciary, and abused Pennsylvania’s constitutional amendment process.

Here’s how we’re fighting to protect democracy in Pennsylvania

  • Opposing a constitutional amendment to gerrymander Pennsylvania’s judiciary

  • Opposing attempts to gerrymander Pennsylvania legislative districts

  • Pushing for state and local action to protect and expand voting rights

  • Educating government officials on their obligations under Pennsylvania’s Environmental Rights Amendment

  • Ask Your State Representatives to Oppose Judicial Gerrymandering
